Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital
Truman VA surgeons perform both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. This allows for integration of endoscopy into the gastrointestinal surgical procedures. The common indications for upper endoscopy (EGD) include heartburn, Barrett’s esophagus, upper abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, and gastrointestinal bleeding as well as to place feeding tubes. Colonoscopy is performed for cancer screening (everyone 50 and older should have a colonoscopy), to remove polyps, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcerative colitis, anorectal disorders, and constipation. An urgent endoscopy can be performed in a timely fashion in the operating room if the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit is not available.
