Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital
Why Are Veterans Special?
Students with winning essays were recognized at Truman VA on November 9.
Each and every day, men and women join the military to serve our country. In November, we all pause, reflect and honor those who are serving and who have served during Veterans Day activities.
During the week of Veterans Day, Truman VA has a tradition. Since 1999, Truman VA has held an annual Veterans Day essay contest. Junior and senior high students in the Columbia Public School District are invited to participate and submit entries on the question—“Why Are Veterans Special?”
This year, four local students were recognized for their entries:
- First Place: Shirley Zhang, West Junior High School
- Second Place: Emily Miller, West Junior High School
- Third Place: Graham Ratermann, West Junior High School
- Honorable Mention: Mariah Miranda, Hickman High School
These students, along with their parents and faculty, were invited to attend a recognition ceremony held on November 9. Portions of the winning essays were read at this event. We are proud of their outstanding essays and invite you to visit the links above to read their work.
