Richard Olesen lost 24 pounds with the MOVE! program and so can you.

I wanted to avoid diabetes so I joined the MOVE! Program. During a visit with my primary care provider, I was told I was borderline diabetic and needed to lose weight. Determined to avoid having to stick myself with a needle every day — coupled with low energy and joint pain — I was willing to give MOVE! a try. I had no idea how I was going to lose weight, but MOVE! gave me a place to learn how.

Keeping a food journal made me aware of everything I put into my body. I joined the MOVE! Program in November 2017. Before starting classes and keeping a food journal, I had no idea how many calories I consumed daily. I would eat a 1100 calorie breakfast at IHOP or a 1400 coffee drink and not think twice. Now, I add up and highlight each meal so that I know how many calories are left for the day. If you really want to lose weight, you will keep track of how many calories you eat and take in what is recommended”.

Before MOVE! even started I bought smaller clothes, knowing I would lose weight. I lost 24 pounds during the 12-week program, and wear a size 34 instead of a 38. I have less knee pain and feel stronger. My entire routine during the day also has changed. I don’t sit around watching television and snacking anymore. I am constantly moving, working on my yard, repairing vehicles or helping my wife — and I do not slow down until 5 p.m.

My life is so different now. Apples used to rot in my refrigerator before MOVE! Now they are my first choice for a snack. We use a nine-inch plate at home, which helps with portion sizes, and we split meals when we eat out. I am smarter about choosing low-sodium options and adjusting recipes to cut-back on calories. I walk with my wife every day. I do not view what I’m doing as a “diet” program. It’s a mindset.

My biggest advice to someone looking to lose weight is to start by tracking your food. If you think of this process as calorie intake instead of dieting you won’t starve and the weight will come off. If you truly are interested in losing weight, you are the only one who can control it. The word “no” does not exist for me.
