Holiday Activities at Truman VA

Red berries covered in frost.

As this year comes to a close, we would like to say thank you and happy holidays to all of our volunteers for your many hours of dedicated service.

During the hustle and bustle of the holidays, Truman VA volunteers organize a number of activities for our Veterans.  These activities brighten the season for Veterans who are inpatients and residents on our Community Living Center (CLC).

  • Gift Shop: On December 13, the American Legion Auxiliary sponsored a Christmas gift shop for residents on our CLC.  Residents selected a gift for themselves and one for a family member or friend. Gifts were sent to the family member or friend if they could not visit during the holiday season.
  • Holiday Gift Wrapping: For the past eleven years, a volunteer group has coordinated a holiday gift wrapping and Christmas with the Veterans event.  This year’s gift wrapping event will be held on Sunday, December 18, at 2 p.m. in the Truman VA Auditorium. If you would like to help this volunteer group with wrapping gifts, please contact Troy Reddick at (573) 881-0137.
  • Christmas Eve:  Each year, a handful of Veterans may spend Christmas Eve in intensive care.  In order to make the holiday more homelike for the families staying with them, Christmas Eve dinner is provided through a partnership with non-profit organization known as Silent Night.  The organization partners with local restaurants to ensure family members can spend their Christmas Eve with their loved one while still enjoying a holiday meal.
  • Christmas with the Veterans: On December 25, while most are home with their families, a group of volunteers visit Veterans at Truman VA.  Christmas Day activities include distribution of gifts to inpatients, caroling on all inpatient units and food and refreshments for residents in the CLC dining area. Although many holiday activities occur at Truman VA, this volunteer group ensures that Veterans staying at Truman VA know someone is thinking about them on Christmas.

As this year comes to a close, we would like to say thank you and happy holidays to all of our volunteers for your many hours of dedicated service.  For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Nathan Witt in Voluntary Service at (573) 814-6405.
