My HealtheVet Veteran Spotlight

William

William "Chris" Jones using the MHV Kiosks

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

William “Chris” Jones was first introduced to the My HealtheVet (MHV) program in 2010. “I didn’t know anything about the program, but signed up when the My HealtheVet coordinator started telling me what the program offered.”

Initially, Chris didn’t utilize the program, until he had trouble calling his primary care provider to set up an appointment. “I was on hold at first, and then told to leave a message. Well, I would leave a message, and then would get called back while I was in a meeting. This phone tag went on for a little while, and I finally thought of the Secure Messaging program.” Chris successfully sent his first Secure Message to get an appointment, and has been doing so ever since. “I make all of my appointment requests through Secure Messaging. I would rather send a message to my provider than sit on the phone.  I can send a quick message and, in usually less than a day, I get a response. It’s so easy.”

Chris soon found that he was able to download his VA records on his home computer and provide them to a non-VA provider he was seeing. “It made it really easy for the outside doctor to get my information without the hassle of going through the Release of Information process.”

Although Chris thought that the program would be difficult to use and navigate, he soon found that the program was an easy way to keep up with his health care. “I consider myself to be a crotchety man who doesn’t really like technology. I would call myself a minimalist with my information being online, but I feel comfortable with this program.”

“I also really like the pharmacy refill option. It is quick, easy and now I can track my medications when I order them. It really couldn’t be simpler to use. Just a couple of clicks and my medications are ordered and will be delivered to my house. No waiting on the phone or mailing in slips of paper.”

The sign up process for My HealtheVet is easy. Veterans can go the main website at www.myhealth.va.gov and create a basic account. With a basic account, they will be able renew their medications online. To upgrade an account, which allows them to access hospital notes, lab results, past and future appointments, parts of their Veterans medical record, and to get access to Secure Messaging, they will need to do an In Person Authentication (IPA). The IPA consists of filling out a VA Release of Information (ROI), form 10-5345a-MHV, at the closest facility to them. They will be asked for an ID to verify their identity, sign the form and, then, their account will be upgraded. It’s that simple.
