Roy Bemiss lost 33 pounds after attending the 12-week MOVE! class.

Roy Bemiss, a United States Air Force Veteran, was motivated to take charge of his own health because he also cares for his son, a disabled Veteran with PTSD. Roy decided to get into better physical shape because he was tired of looking in the mirror and seeing someone with too much weight in his face, belly and hips. “I made up my mind that it was time to kick myself in the butt and do it. Just do it.”

What have you tried in the past?

Roy has struggled with his weight since high school. His previous weight-loss attempts included limiting processed foods and sugars, and increasing his intake of fruits and vegetables. Roy knew it would be an adjustment to control his diet and increase physical activity. However, he was determined to achieve a higher level of physical fitness, so he enrolled in Truman VA’s MOVE! program.

What about the MOVE! program worked?

The MOVE! program encouraged Roy to keep a food journal, allowing him to realize the best food choices for meals and snacks. As a result, he felt more satisfied knowing he consumed enough calories through healthy food choices, yet avoided feeling “thanksgiving full.” In addition to increasing the quality of his diet, Roy also incorporated more exercise into his daily routine.

How much weight have you lost? What benefits have you noticed?

Roy’s weight was approximately 300 pounds in the Fall of 2017 when he began the MOVE! program. After completing the introductory course, he attended the 12-week MOVE! Weight Management program via Clinical Video Telehealth at his local community based outpatient clinic. By the end of the 12-week program, Roy had lost a total of 33 pounds and went from a size 54 to a size 44 pant. When looking at photographs, Roy notices less weight in his face and around his stomach. Others also have noticed and commented on his weight loss.
